The Silowana Landscape

Project date: January 2019 – December 2019

Silowana is a vast ecosystem in south-western Zambia and a vital landscape in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. Historically it has faced a range of threats, aggravated by a lack of investment and the absence of sustainable livelihoods for its communities. SUN supported Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) in Silowana and has enabled a partnership between PPF and SYSTEMIQ. This partnership aims to improve the productivity of the ecosystem through reintroducing wildlife and providing for its conservation. It also looks to maximize the sustainable economic benefits of this wildlife for local people by developing economic activities, especially tourism. This project successfully achieved Ministerial sign-off of a Strategic Business Plan, where the extensive stakeholder engagement with local communities and traditional leaders fostered strong interest for the project and support.
